Chiltern Harriers had a very good day at the office in the
fourth and penultimate match in the Chiltern Cross Country League.
Under sunny skies and with a firm, fast and short set of courses the
Chiltern runners, especially in the younger age groups, had a great
day. Overall the team was fourth and lies fifth going into the final
match.
In the Under 11 girls race, Sophie Morton secured her fourth win of the
season to confirm her as Chiltern League champion. Having their best
runs of the season were Sandie Pohlman in fourth and Robyn Watkins in
ninth. Lily Pearson ran well coming back from injury to be 11th and
there was an encouraging debut from Hannah West in 16th. The girls won
on the day and lead the division by a small margin going into the last
match.
The Under 11 boys also won on the day and are in an unassailable
position at the top of the league, leading by over 150 points going
into the final match. Having great runs on Saturday were Ben Smith in
third, Cameron Reid in fifth and Ethan Kidd in tenth.
More wins cam from both Under 13 teams. The girls ran brilliantly to
record their first team victory of the season. Hannah Thear was second,
Lizzie Barraclough seventh, Orla Fawcett ninth and Abi Jones
thirteenth. There was also a very good run from Katie McCartney in
14th. The girls moved up to second place in the league.
The Under 13 boys had several runners back from school duty and put in
a powerful performance to win by over 30 points. In-form Sam Henning
was the individual winner with Will Perkin third, Robert Hall fifth and
Angus Denison-Smith ninth. Also having strong runs were Theo Kontos
10th and Fred Sanders 15th. The boys lead their division by 70 points
going into the last match.
The Under 15s almost kept the 100% victory quota going with a win for
the boys and the girls second by just one point from league leaders
Windsor. Hannah Morton (2nd), Connie Lewis (3rd), Katie Bench (12th)
and Amy Fawcett (13th) scored the girls’ points with Emma Barraclough
and Sophie Chesterman also having solid runs in 17th and 20th
respectively. The girls lie third league-to-date.
James McCarthy won the Under 15 boys in impressive style and Joe
Aherne, fourth, Bill Hughes, fifth, and Sam Butcher, ninth, made up the
wining team. Joe Cochrane in 15th and Callum Neal in 16th provided
solid backup. The win brings the Chiltern boys up to 11 points of
league leaders Bedford with one match to go.
Michael Goddard (9th), Elie Bou-Gharios (18th), Liam MacDonald (21st)
and Chris Strong (24th) brought the Under 17 men home in third place to
continue in third for the season. Phoebe Cutter in 15th and Hannah
Wardley 20th scored useful points in the Under 17 women’s race.
The senior women had a solid outing with Sian Thomas leading the way in
eighth. Ali Young (16th), Sarah Quantrill (20th), and Judith Orr (34th)
were the rest of the team that came fourth and the team is third
league-to-date. Ali, Sarah, Judith and Barbara Ralph won the Vets race
and the Chiltern lady vets have a big lead going into the last match.
The senior men had quite a good race. Fabian Downs had his best league
race of the season to be sixth. Eddie O’Gorman (27th), Derek Brown
(36th), debutant Grant Paul-Florence (68th), Richard Quantrill (81st),
Arwel Roberts (83rd) and Ian Lawson (96th) also scored well in the top
100. The men were sixth on the day and are seventh overall for the
season.
The last match is on February 11th at Wing where final team and
individual positions will be decided.
