Chiltern Harriers had a very successful day on Saturday at the Bucks
Cross Country Championships held at Cottesloe School, Wing in
conjunction with the Bedfordshire Championships.
On a sunny but cool and blustery day with relatively dry underfoot
conditions, there were team wins for the Under 13 boys, Under 15 girls,
and Under 15 boys, with individual wins for Sam Henning (U13 boys),
Connie Lewis (U15 girls), James McCarthy (U15 boys). All also had the distinction of being the leading runners
across both counties.
The Under 13 girls, Under 17 men and senior men’s teams were all second
and there were individual medals for Hannah Thear (U13 girls silver),
Will Perkin (U13 boys bronze), and Fabian Downs (senior men silver).
The Under 13 girls began proceedings and there was a solid performance
from the Chiltern youngsters to gain team silver. Hannah Thear was
always in contention and had a good run to finish the tough 3k course
in second place. The rest of the scoring team was Lizzie Barraclough
(8th) and Katie McCartney (9th). Also featuring in the top 20 were
Rachel Padwick (10th), Mimi Houlihan-Burne (13th), Sandie Pohlman
(14th) and Alex Hughes-Morgan (16th).
The Under 13 Chiltern boys were dominant, filling 11 of the top 14
positions. Sam Henning ran strongly from the front of a very strong
field to record a great victory. Will Perkin had his best run of the
season to be third and there was a flood of Chiltern boys behind, Angus
Denison-Smith (4th), Robert Hall (5th), Fred Sanders (6th), Theo Kontos
(9th), Jack Murray (10th), Freddie Burrell (11th), Jonny Stenning
(12th), Calum Steer (13th), and Richard Slade (14th).
The Under 15 girls race was a close-fought affair with Chiltern’s girls
winning (19 points) ahead of Beaconsfield High School (20 pts) and
Milton Keynes (21 pts). Connie Lewis had a great run on a tough 4.3k
course to record her fourth consecutive county title. Katie Bench
battled hard to be 8th and Amy Fawcett completed the scoring in 10th.
The Under 15 boys were led home by in-form James McCarthy winning by
over 45 seconds. Bill Hughes (4th) Joe Aherne (5th) and Joe Cochrane
(8th) were the other scorers in a great team win.
The Under 17 men featured a good run from Michael Goddard to be fourth
but George Gillingwater turned and ankle and Jack Walker was absent
through illness so the team had to settle for second. Liam McDonald
(11th), Elie Bou-Gharios (12th) and George Gillingwater (13th) were the
scorers behind Michael.
