The third Chiltern League match of the season took place at a
cool and sunny Verulamium Park, St Albans on Saturday with a solid
performance from the Chiltern Harriers athletes.
Fourth place overall on the day kept the Chiltern team in fifth place
for the season so far. There were many good performances through the
age groups on a tough, undulating and, in places, surprisingly muddy
course.
The Under 11s are again having great seasons. The Under 11 girls were
first race on the programme and Sophie Morton showed her class by
having another comfortable win. Despite only being in Year 6, Sophie
has been selected to run for Hertfordshire U13s in next Saturday’s
Southern Inter-Counties Championships, a great achievement for the 11
year old. Assisting Sophie to a team win were Sandie Pohlman in sixth
and Robyn Watkins having a great run on debut to be tenth.
The Under 11 boys are running away with their league. Callum Hodson,
fourth, Cameron Reid, fifth, and Ethan Kidd, sixth, were the scorers in
the winning team and there were good runs from Ben Smith, seventh, and
Finley Davis, 15th. The boys have over 100 points lead going into the
final two matches.
The U13s also had a good day. The girls were narrowly fourth and are
third overall. Hannah Thear had another good run to be seventh.
Completing the team were Lizzie Barraclough (14th), Abi Jones (16th),
and Rachel Padwick (18th). The strength in depth of this team was shown
by Katie McCartney (19th), Mimi Houlihan-Burne (21st), Maddy Lacey
(24th) and Alex Hughes-Morgan (30th) all having good runs.
The U13 boys were again missing six runners away at the English Schools
Cup final. The remaining boys nevertheless had a very good day with
Angus Denison-Smith, fourth, Tom Conway, fifth, Theo Kontos, 13th, and
Calum Steer, 19th, achieving second place on the day. After three
matches the boys have a 34 point lead and should have full-strength
teams for the final two matches.
Connie Lewis was fourth in the U15 girls race. Georgie Bingham, 15th,
Amy Fawcett, 20th, and Emma Barraclough, 21st completed the team that
came third. The girls are third overall in a tightly-fought league.
For the U15 boys, James McCarthy had a good run to be second. Bill
Hughes was fourth, Sam Butcher seventh and Will Oleksiuk 32nd to take
second place. The boys are second league-to-date.
In the U17s Phoebe Cutter, 13th, and Hannah Wardley, 18th, scored
useful points and there was another good outing for the U17 men with
George Gillingwater, fifth, Michael Goddard, seventh, Ben Whitney,
tenth, and Jack Walker, 18th placing second. There was good back-up
from Chris Strong, Jimmy Davies, Liam McDonald, and Elie Bou-Gharios.
The senior women again held their own with Sian Thomas running well for
fifth. Ali Young, 18th, Caroline Holden, 24th, and Kirstie Elliott,
27th, completed the foursome that was second. The women are lying in
third after three matches. The Vet women had yet another win with Ali
and Caroline joined by Sarah Caulfield, 36th, and Kate Loach, 52nd as
team scorers.
Final race of the day was the senior men and the Chiltern team were
ninth. Fabian Downs, tenth, Eddie O’Gorman, 36th, Adam Bowller, 65th,
Michael Turney, 88th, Arwel Roberts, 97th, and Julius Fawcett, 99th,
led the scoring. The men are eighth season-to-date.
The next match is on January 14th at Slough and hopes are high of
further good progress as the league approaches its climax.
