The inaugural Shardeloes 10K organised by Chiltern Harriers took place successfully on Sunday in bright, warm conditions. The new course, a variation on the old Amersham 5 route, proved a stiff test nevertheless and only a handful of runners finished under 40 minutes. The race headquarters of Amersham Cricket Club provided a scenic backdrop to the race which runs in a large loop towards Little Missenden and Mop End before dropping back to the cricket ground.

The race, again sponsored by Gil-Lec Electrical Wholesalers, saw a victory for Chiltern Harriers’ Fabian Downs in 36.14 with Vale of Aylesbury’s Paul Gregory second in 36.34 and Chiltern’s Eddie O’Gorman third in 36.56. First junior was Chiltern’s Michael Goddard and the Vet 40 prize was won by Chiltern’s Richard Quantrill. The Vet 50 award went to Lee Benjamin of Thames Valley Harriers and the Vet 60 prize to Leonard Smith.

The first woman home was Chichester AC’s Fay Cripps in 44.00 with Rugby and Northampton’s Jo Pulsford second in 44.25 and Tring’s Sarah Hill third in 48.11. Leading female junior was Wycombe’s Georgina Russell in 50.07 and first Vet 35 was Chiltern’s Ali Young in 44.30. First vet 45 was Anna Wittekind.

On the team side, the men’s prize went to Chiltern Harriers comprising Fabian Downs, Eddie O’Gorman, James Repper and Michael Goddard. Chiltern also took the women’s team award with the threesome of Ali Young, Sarah Caulfield and Tracy Edwards being victorious.

There were also two other races taking place. The 4K run was won by U15 James McCarthy in a good time of 13.43. Joe Aherne was second in 14.26 and third male was Sam Henning in 15.19. First female was Connie Lewis in 14.29, second Hannah Morton in 15.02 and third Hannah Thear in 16.11. The 1 mile family run saw a comfortable victory for U11 Ben Smith and the first girl home was U11 Lily Pearson. There was a good debut performance from second placed overall Tom Hunter.
