Chiltern Harriers started Sunday with a narrow lead in their nine-club division, but after a superb set of performances opened up a sizeable gap at the top of Division 1 South (North West) of the McCain National Young Athletes League.

At a cool and drizzly Perivale the Chiltern team amassed a club record 606.5 points to win from Woking AC with 475 and Ealing, Southall and Middlesex AC with 459.5. There was a record turnout for Chiltern with thirty boys and twenty-nine girls taking part.

Under 13 Girls
Claire Buttivant won the shot with a new PB of 6.25m and Hannah Thear was a comfortable winner of the 800m. Orla Fawcett and Lizzie Barraclough were a 1-2 in the 1200m, both in PBs. Fran Luttrell made a good debut in the sprints and there was useful support from Rose Dakin, Maddy Lacey, and Amy Bower.

Under 15 Girls
Connie Lewis won the 1500m in a Grade 2 time, Sarah Cross won the shot, Rebecca Yeabsley the 75m hurdles, and Hannah Morton the high jump. The girls gave a good all-round performance with Hannah Shepard, Rebecca Yeabsley, Claudia McInerney, Rachel Klima, Sarah Cross and Amy Nicholson in the sprints, and Rosalind Firth, Katie Bench and Hannah Morton in middle distance, all competing hard. Amy Goddard won good points in long jump and high jump as did Maria Slade in shot and discus, whilst Amy Buttivant had a good debut in the javelin.

Under 17 Women
A stronger than usual team did well with a win in the 3000m for Hannah Wardley. Emily Thomson, Amy Harris, Chloe Allen, Ashleigh Race, Abby Nicholls, Madison Doey and Ania Quested all won points in a variety of events and there was a great win for the 4 x 300m team of Chloe Allen, Amy Harris, Hannah Wardley and Ashleigh Race.

Under 13 Boys
The boys scored huge points with several wins. Will Perkin and Robert Hall were a 1-2in the 1500m, both in Grade 2 times. Debutant Daniel Richards won the 200m, and the shot with 9.15m, which puts him in the top ten in the country for this event. Will Perkin and Rohan Montgomery were a 1-2 in the high jump with PBs and Thomas Conway won the long jump, and the 800m. Jack Denton had a good debut in 100m and long jump and Alex Ahern and Josh Hughes were 1-2 in the 75m hurdles. The 4 x 100m team of Thomas Conway, Alex Ahern, Daniel Richards and Jack Denton were comfortable winners. Oli Moir ran well to earn a PB in the 100m.

Under 15 Boys
James White and Matt Sperling were 1-2 in both sprints with James also winning the long jump. Armaan Sandhu won the discus with a new PB and James McCarthy won the high jump, 400m and 800m, with Jack Hughes second in the 400m. There was great support from Charlie Smith, Sam Butcher, Joe Aherne, Frazer Pegler, and Callum Neal. Versatile athlete Callum Reid-Jones was going well in the high jump before injuring a knee and having to retire from his other events. The teams in 4 x 100m (James White, Matt Sperling, Frazer Pegler, Sam Butcher) and 4x 400m relays (Jack Hughes, Sam Butcher, Joe Aherne, James McCarthy) were both winners

Under 17 Men
John Underwood won the 100m hurdles and picked up useful points in the hammer and discus. Dominic Janson won the 100m, Michael Goddard the 400m hurdles and 1500m steeplechase, Chris Strong the 1500m and there were good efforts from Nick Brabbs, Brandon Janson, George Gillingwater, Dan Cady, Alex Johnson, and Jimmy Davies. The 4 x 100m relay squad of Nick Brabbs, John Underwood, Brandon Janson and Dominic Janson were victorious.

With one match to go Chiltern are around 70 points in front of second placed Hillingdon. Team managers are looking for another great turnout in the club’s ‘home’ match at Watford on June 19th to push for league victory.
