A great turnout of twenty four Chiltern Harriers young
athletes took part in the latest Watford open on Wednesday evening with
a glut of PBs over 1500m.
There were twenty races altogether starting at 7.30 and ending close to
10pm. In Race 1 Under 13s Mimi Houlihan-Burne, Abi Jones and Claire
Buttivant were all making their debut at the distance. Mimi came in at
5.44.24, Claire clocked 5.54.48 and Abi 5.55.43.
Race 2 saw Under 15 Amy Fawcett and debutant Under 13 Lizzie
Barraclough race. Amy reached 5.31.30 and Lizzie 5.37.30. In Race 3
there was a win for Under 17 Hannah Wardley in a new PB of 5.13.50. She
was chased home by Under 15 Georgie Bingham, also logging a PB of
5.14.26. Also featuring in this one were U13 Orla Fawcett running a PB
of 5.24.59, U15 Emma Barraclough, a season’s best of 5.28.55 and,
making his debut, U13 Rohan Montgomery, in 5.37.15.
Race 5 saw U13 Hannah Thear run a season’s best of 5.11.31. In Race 6
U13 Sam Henning got a PB of 5.04.46 and U15 Hannah Morton in Race 7
took a couple of seconds off her best to reach 4.57.69.
In Race 8 U15 Bill Hughes made his return after a long injury lay-off.
He ran strongly to win in 4.50.34 with U13 Robert Hall not far behind,
also running a best of 4.56.03. Race 9 was a highlight of the evening
with U15 Callum Neal running a PB of 4.45.66 and U15 Connie Lewis,
after many attempts, reaching the English Schools qualifying time of
4.51 with 4.49.58.
The Under 17s also did well. There were PBs in Races 11 and 12 for
Jimmy Davies (4.38.27) and Ben Whitney (4.28.96). The next Chiltern
action came in Race 15 with Jack Walker running 4.20.14 and George
Gillingwater 4.26.40. Race 16 saw a victory for Michael Goddard in a
new best of 4.10.45. In Race 17 U20 Allan Stewart clocked 4.08.72.
The sole sprinter for the evening was Alex Ahern running 14.64 for 100m
