Three Under 11 Chiltern Harriers helped The Beacon School in Chesham Bois win the Under 11 team trophy at Malvern College, Worcestershire on Sunday in the National Prep School Cross Country Championships.
On a tough 2600m course in wet and very muddy conditions, the win was emphatic with The Beacon scoring 54 points. The next school Abberley Hall had 94 and Cheam Hall third had 114. The win could have been even more convincing but a collision at the start between Angus Denison-Smith and David Willcox meant that they both had ground to make up.
Angus recovered the quicker but David was stranded at the back of the pack. He bravely got up and ran through the field to finish in 17th place from the 156th finishers. Meanwhile Angus ran very well to be in the lead until the last fifty yards, ultimately finishing in a superb second place, four seconds behind the winner. Ed Mundy had a great run to finish in third place.
David and Ed are eligible for Under 13 track and field athletics this summer whilst Angus, still only in Year 5, can look to further his primary school and Chiltern Under 11 age group cross country success next winter.
The only other Chiltern interest was in the Under 11 girls race where Mimi Houlihan-Burne had a very good run for Chesham Prep to finish in 22nd place from the 103 finishers.
