Mel was getting a cup of tea when the Adnams man snapped us! |
Sunday 22nd November was billed as the inaugural Adnams Southwold 10K, to be held in Southwold on the Suffolk coast. Mel Folkard, a regular visitor to the area (and always keen to partake of its ales) spread the word, so on Friday 20th Mel, Heidi, Brenda King and myself (Richard Abraham) headed north-east in the face of a dire weather forecast (60kph winds and rain) to give it a try.
On paper the route looked a bit dull; two-and-a-half laps on the road. In practice it was a very varied race with flat, with hard into-the-wind bits, downhill into-the-wind sections and an uphill with-the-wind leg. Although it was very, very windy, the rain held off until the end. By the way, did I mention it was windy?
We were staying in the Swan Inn (the Adnams brewery-tap) and despite (or maybe because of?) the copious quantities of Adnams bitter consumed on the Friday evening, Saturday lunch time and Saturday evening, we all had good runs, especially Heidi who came in 16th female despite being bitten in the leg by the cramp dragon in the last kilometer, which slowed her to a walk. And how did we celebrate afterwards? A pint in the Swan, of course!
Final results:
| Mel | 45.42 | 53rd overall | 48th male |
| Heidi | 50.52 | 123rd overall | 16th female |
| Richard | 54.04 | 174th overall | 139th male |
| Brenda | 56.12 | 204th overall | 52nd female |
Would we do it again? You bet!
