The second running of the Chiltern Harriers' New Amersham 5 sponsored by Gil-lec Electrical Wholesalers, took place on Sunday in glorious sunny conditions at Amersham Cricket Club, Shardeloes.
An increased field of 244 tackled the tough 5.4 mile multi-terrain course which follows the South Bucks Way to Little Missenden before turning up to Mop End and back down to race HQ.
The race this year was won by Harrow AC's Julian Critchlow in a course record of 30.41. In second place was Chiltern's Eddie O'Gorman in 31.05 and his team-mate Fabian Downs was third in 34.41. In fourth was winner of the prize for fastest junior, Wycombe Phoenix's William Langley in 32.51 and in fifth was winner of the Vet 40 prize, Handy Cross Runners' Frank Fulcher who ran 32.59. Vet 50 prize-winner was Bingley Harriers' Carey Gray, ninth in 35.09. The team prize went to Chiltern Harriers with Eddie and Fabian being joined by Jon Taylor, eighth in 34.57 and Steve Perkin, 13th in 36.42.
In the high-quality ladies race, the winner was Wycombe Phoenix's young athlete Pippa Woolven, coming home in 17th overall in 37.36. Vale of Aylesbury's Julia Austin was second in 38.02 and Wycombe's Julia Blackstock was third in 38.04 and she took the first junior prize as Pippa won the main race winner title. First Vet 35 in the ladies race was Chiltern's Cath Holloway, fourth in 38.12 and first vet 45 was Watford Joggers' Caroline Whittaker, ninth in 41.37. The team prize again went to Chiltern Harriers with Cath Holloway joined by Ali Young, fifth, and Sian Thomas, seventh.
The first event of the schedule was the 4K fun run, mainly featuring younger athletes. Winner this year was Chiltern Harriers' Under 15 Jack Dutton who put in a powerful performance to finish in 14.14. In second place was fellow Under 15 Michael Goddard in 14.25, and Under 17 Dan Loach was third in 14.39. First girl was Under 13 Chiltern runner Connie Lewis in 15.35. Wycombe Phoenix's Under 15 Georgina Russell was second in 16.26 and Chiltern's Hannah Morton (under 13) was third in 16.32.
The final race of the program was the 1 mile family run, won by Year 5 boy, Chiltern's Angus Denison-Smith. The next few places were all girls in the promising Chiltern Under 11 squad. Girls winner was Nadine Elliasson, with Lizzie Barraclough second and Hannah Thear in third. Also running very well were Sophie Morton and Sandie Pohlman.
