Seven Chiltern Harriers were representing Buckinghamshire on Sunday in this high calibre competition featuring the best young track and field athletes from fourteen southern counties, from Dorset to Norfolk and Bedfordshire to Hampshire.

Success story of the day was Callum Reid-Jones who competed in three events, setting new PBs in two and equalling his record in the other. Callum started with the 'A string' high jump and finished twelfth, matching the 1.40m he had set the previous week but just failed to clear 1.45m. Next up was the 'A string' 75m hurdles where he recorded 13.7 to set a new PB by 0.6 sec in coming sixth, and finally Callum was fifth in the 'B string' javelin with a new best distance of 25.17m.

Chiltern's other athletes featured in the middle distance races where times were affected by a strong swirling wind. James McCarthy ran well in a strong field to set a new best time of 2.20.46 in coming fifth in the 'A string' 800m. Joe Cochrane ran a strong second lap to finish fifth in the 'B string' 800m in 2.30.10. Andrew Stenning was in the 'B string' 1500m and finished in 10th spot in 5.12.48.

In the girls 800m Rosalind Firth ran in the 'A string' race and in a congested field ran 2.42.93 to come 14th. In the 'B' race Claudia McInerney came 10th in 2.49.68. In the 'B string' 1500m Connie Lewis was in a neck and neck battle for the line but was just edged out to finish second in 5.09.52.

Year 6 Ley Hill pupil Sam Fulford gained county recognition after strong performances in the county championship in May. He threw a javelin PB of 23.96m and long jumped 3.46m

All in all good experience for the young athletes and a just reward in gaining county representation after a season of hard training and competition.
