Chiltern Harriers won a nail-biting match at a rainy and blustery St Albans on Sunday. The club, which acted as host for this first meeting of the season, finished on 448.5 points ahead of Thames Valley Harriers in second on 441.5 and Camberley and District on 415. The other teams in the division, Woking AC, Abingdon Amblers and Walton AC, also had good teams, so the league season looks like it will be close and exciting.

The Chiltern team of 20 boys and 20 girls had many successes. A string winners were Under 17 men - Joel Williams:100m, Zac Underwood:pole vault; Under 15 boys - Michael Goddard:400m, Jack Walker:800m; Under 13 boys - James McCarthy:800m, Robert Hughes:75m hurdles and shot, Callum Reid-Jones:high jump; Under 15 girls - Georgie MacDonald:200m, Jess Franks:1500m, Hannah Barnetson:discus and shot; Under 13 girls - Rosalind Firth:800m, Connie Lewis:1200m.

The two athletes who featured with the best nationally graded performances were Joel Williams with a grade 1 100m of 11.10, and Connie Lewis with a grade 2 1200m of 4.06.4.

The relays provided their usual exciting conclusion to the meeting and the Under 15 boys 4x400m quartet of Michael Goddard, Jack Walker, Alex Johnson, and Jack Dutton won their race in great style. The Under 13 boys (James McCarthy, Callum Reid-Jones, Andrew Stenning, and Robert Hughes) and Under 15 boys (Nick Brabbs, Jack Walker, Jack Dutton, and Tom Brady) 4x100m teams were also victorious.

There were countless other great performances with several athletes generously participating in new events to build up the team's points score, and the athletes coped well with the constantly changing conditions, which featured harsh showers, bright sunshine and a swirling, gusty wind.

The second match is on May 31st at Walton on Thames and the club are hoping for further success to build on this initial great result.
