Chiltern Harriers hosted its first major race of the year on Bank Holiday Monday evening with the Pednor 5 road race.
A large entry of 210 runners tackled the scenic five mile Pednor loop road in ideal cool conditions with only a slight breeze to hinder runners.
Race winner was Chiltern's Tom Beedell in 27.44, with Eddie O'Gorman, also of Chiltern, only a week after his London Marathon effort, second in 28.24. Handy Cross Runners' Frank Fulcher was third in 28.28. First Vet 40 was Vale of Aylesbury's Andrew Rolt in 28.29 and the Vet 50 prize went to Tring RC's Robert Brown in 32.42. Vale of Aylesbury's Tommy Atkins was first junior, and fifth overall in a time of 28.31.
The team prize went to Chiltern with Jon Taylor, 9th in 29.28 and Patrick Wallace, 10th in 29.30, completing the winning foursome. Vale of Aylesbury were second team with Watford Harriers third.
In the women's race victory went to Sara Luck of Havering Mayesbrook in a time of 31.06. Second was Julia Austin of Aylesbury in 33.21 with her teammate Jodie Digby close behind in 33.28 to be third. First Vet 35 was Chiltern's Laura Butt in 33.31 and first Vet 45 was Chiltern's Sandra Levet in 34.27. First junior was Aylesbury's Rachel Card in 36.38.
The women's team race was a very close affair with the Chiltern threesome of Laura Butt, Sarah Quantrill and Judith Orr, on 15 points, just holding off the Vale of Aylesbury scoring trio who finished on 17 points.
Earlier in the evening the Pednor race walk took place over the same 5 mile circuit as the run, and attracted 40 walkers. Winner of the men's race was Peter Ryan of Ilford Ac in 44.06, second was Steven Uttley, also of Ilford in 44.30 and third was Leicester Walking Club's Mark Wall in 45.17. The race incorporated the Bucks Race Walking Championship and the winner of this was Chiltern Harriers' John Ralph.
The women's walk was won by Helen Middleton of Enfield and Haringey AC in 48.05, with Aldershot's Fiona Bishop second in 51.15 and Jackie Carver third and Bucks Champion. Winner of the Pednor Challenge for the fastest combined walk and run time was Chiltern Harriers' Alex Watson and the prize for the best combined women's time went to Elspeth Attwood. In the Under 15 2 mile walk, Katie Royals improved her course record to 21.12.
