Whilst some of the older Chiltern Harriers young athletes competed at Bracknell, children in the 8-13 age groups enjoyed a great afternoon's competition at Lee Valley's indoor arena in north London. For all of them, it was their first visit to this fabulous facility, one of only four UK Athletics High Performance centres in the country.
There were twelve Chiltern youngsters competing from a total number of over 200, divided into 8-9, 10-11, and 12-13 age groups, and all acquitted themselves well. They chose three events from a short list of 60m, 60m hurdles, 600m, high jump, long jump and shot. Although there were good performances in the sprints, jumps and shot, it was in the three-lap 600m races where the green vests of Chiltern caught the eye.
There were wins for David Willcox in the 8-9 race and for Will Perkin and Evie Gardner in their 10-11 races. Rosalind Firth showed her experience, pacing her effort to perfection to win her 12-13 race comfortably. Also running well for their first outing of the season were Emma Buttivant, Rachel Padwick, Tom Dore and Charlie Stevens in the 8-9 group; Claire Buttivant, Claudia Jones, and Robyn Lisle in the 10-11s and Amy Buttivant in the 12-13s.
Points were accumulated for each event and gold, silver and bronze awards presented at the end of the meeting, all the Chiltern contingent receiving a medal. Taking time out from training at Lee Valley, GB Olympian sprinter Jeannette Kwayke presented the medals to the thrilled children.
Some of Chiltern Harriers young athletes got the track and field season going with competition at Bracknell AC's open meeting on Saturday.
On a cool, blustery and showery day, conditions were not ideal but there were several good performances and PBs. On the girls side, first year Under 17 Isabelle Assirati won the only medal of the day with bronze in the long jump with a leap of 4.56 and logged sprint times of 13.70 for the 100m and 29.50 in the 200m. There were three first year Under 15s competing : Amy Harris recording PBs of 2.34.0 in the 800m, 29.90 in the 200m, and 3.66m in the long jump; Alicia Evans ran 14.30 in the 100m, 29.00 in the 200m, and threw 15.84m in the discus; and Katie Royals ran 2.50.0 in the 800m and threw a 9.50m javelin.
