Chiltern Harriers athletes were in evidence running for Bucks Schools or Herts Schools at the final major cross country event of the season on Saturday. Held in the spectacular setting of Stanford Hall in Leicestershire, with warm sunshine and tough, undulating courses, the English Schools event showed off most of England's major cross country talents.
Allan Stewart ended his great season on a high, coming home as first Buckinghamshire finisher in the senior boys race of 6.8k in 25.19, despite being a first year. He was 68th from a field of 302.
The intermediate boys had three Chiltern competitors but only Alex Watson of Herts Schools finished. He was third Hertfordshire counter in 228th place in 20.35 on the 5.4k course. Unfortunately Rob Smith and Dan Loach, competing for Bucks Schools, both picked up injuries and did not finish.
The junior boys featured four Chiltern runners. Michael Goddard, running for Herts and in his first year at this event came 50th in 16.06 on the 4.1k circuit leading his county team home. Dan Barraclough had an excellent run to be 54th for Bucks Schools in 16.10 and third team scorer. Also for Bucks, George Gillingwater was 199th in 17.08 and Jack Walker was 211th in 17.12 in the race of 317 finishers.
The sole Chiltern representative in the girls races was Amy Harris, a first year in the junior event. She finished a creditable 167th and fourth Bucks scorer in 12.37 on the 3.25K course.
