Several club members were competing for the Challoner's schools in the English Schools Final at Shepshed High School, Leicestershire on Saturday with the Challoner's High Junior team putting in an outstanding performance to win the competition.
All six runners on the girls' team are club members but unfortunately Rosalind Firth (third counter in the Regional Round) was struck down with flu midweek and could not take part. The remaining five took on the short but muddy and hilly course and achieved a points total of 69, a winning margin of 11 points over James Allen's Girls School from London.
First year Connie Lewis was first finisher in an excellent fifth place with Jessica Franks seven seconds behind in eighth. Beth Cotterell was 26th and Amy Harris 30th to complete the scoring foursome, Jemma Wenman ran a solid race to come 83rd from the 143 finishers.
The strength of running in the region was highlighted by Robert Bloomfield School from Bedford and Aylesbury High School coming fourth and fifth respectively in the team standings.
The Challoner's Boys, all first years, finished in 14th place with Chiltern Harriers Andrew Stenning (29th), James McCarthy (45th), and Joe Cochrane (82nd) being the first three Challoner's scorers. The team was completed by Toby Wilson (97th), Ewan Hardie (104th), and Luke Naylor (106th). This shows much promise for next year's competition.
