The autumn national inter-schools cross country competition began on Thursday for local schools with the first round.
Held at John Colet School in Wendover, this was a chance for some of our club athletes in Years 7 to 10 to gain some early season race experience and potentially help their schools to the next stage of the competition.
On short, fairly flat courses the first two races for 'Juniors' (Years 7 and 8) saw team victories for Dr Challoners High School in the girls event, and Dr Challoners Grammar School in the boys.
All six of the Challoners girls are Chiltern Harriers and each ran well to record a notable victory against strong opposition from Aylesbury High School and Beaconsfield High School, who finished second and third respectively.
Highest placed finisher was Jessica Franks who ran a positive race to come second behind talented Becky High runner Rebecca Croft. Close behind were Connie Lewis in fourth and Amy Harris in fifth, and final team counter was the improving Beth Cotterell in eleventh. Jemma Wenman finished in 17th well ahead of other teams final scorers but Katie Royals suffered from a recurrence of a heel injury to finish down the field.
The Challoners Grammar boys packed well in the top ten with Chiltern's Andrew Stenning showing good form to finish fourth. Fellow club runners James McCarthy and Joe Cochrane were sixth and seventh. Tom La Motte finished the scoring in eighth place.
In the Intermediate races (Years 9 and 10) Phoebe Cutter (DCHS) finished an excellent sixth against high quality opposition in the girls event. In the boys race Dan Barraclough (RGS High Wycombe) was eighth and George Gillingwater (DCGS) ninth.
