Saturday saw several of the younger club members competing for their schools in the first Chesham & District Primary Schools cross country race of the four-race winter series.

The event was hosted by Chalfont St Peter and Chesham Prep and was held for the first time at RAF Halton. The courses were quite short but hilly and were a stern test on a cool, windy but thankfully dry morning.

The year 6 girls race saw a 'Chiltern' 1-2-3 with Chesham Prep's Claudia Jones winning a thrilling race from Mia Poplawska of Heatherton House in second and Godstowe's Evie Gardner third. Several other club runners finished in the top twenty including Elangeni's Katie Pawlyn, Chalfont St Peter's Robyn Lisle, Godstowe's Kathryn Baker, Great Missenden's Rebecca Yeabsley, and Chesham Prep's Sammy Bousfield.

Other Chiltern runners also putting on winning performances were Bill Hughes from Elangeni in the Year 6 boys race, Claire Buttivant of Chalfont St Peter in the Year 5 girls, and Elangeni's Will Perkin in the Year 5 boys.

Rachel Padwick and Jessica Empson of Elangeni and Chalfont's Harriet Church also featured in the top 10 of the Year 5 girls race with Johnny Stenning (Chalfont), Josh Hughes (Chalfont) and Robert Hall (Elangeni) in the top 10 of the boys race. So plenty of reasons for optimism for the Under 11s going into the cross country season.

There was a further Chiltern 1-2-3 in the Year 4 girls race with Heatherton's Nadine Eliason winning from Elangeni's Lizzie Barraclough and Chalfont St Peter's Georgie Cooper. In the Year 3 girls race, Sophie Morton was the winner, guesting for Beechwood Park School.

The races would not be possible without hares and tortoises, and Laura Butt, Judith Orr, John Morton, and Neil Thubron worked hard in guiding the children around the courses. Younger runners who have moved on to senior school also helped with haring - Ellie Jones, Beth Hitchcock, and Amy Buttivant doing a great job.

With the first Chiltern Cross Country League race next week at Cassiobury Park, Watford, this was a good preparatory warm-up for our Under 11 runners.
