Chiltern Harriers' new look Amersham 5 had a successful launch on Sunday with close to 200 competitors completing the testing 5.3 mile course. The event was sponsored by Gil-Lec Electrical Wholesalers and East Building and Timber Supplies.
The new start and finish area at Amersham Cricket Club, Shardeloes gave a spectacular backdrop to all three races. The sun shone throughout and although the recent dry spell had dried up the previously wet ground, parts of the course remained muddy which, adding to the hilly route, made for a gruelling race.
The main event of the day was the Amersham 5 itself. This was won convincingly by Handy Cross Runners' Frank Fulcher in 31.54 with James Repper second in 33.41, and Brendan Greene of Queen's Park Harriers third in 33.54.
In fourth place and winning the prize for first Vet 40 was local runner James Orr, running for fun team, Elangeni Nevers, in a time of 34.19. Mikk Bradley of Watford Harriers claimed first Vet 50 in 35.46 and overall 11th place. First junior was Chiltern Harriers' own Elliott Mocharrafie, who finished in sixth overall in 35.29.
The men's team prize went to Chiltern Harriers, Elliott joined by Alister Mellor, fifth in 35.12, John Taylor, tenth in 35.43 and Paul Manners, twelfth in 35.55.
Winner of the ladies race was Alison Young of Chiltern Harriers in 38.15, with Julia Austin of Vale of Aylesbury second in 41.15 and Ali Milton third in 42.35. Chiltern Harriers were team winners, Ali Young joined by Lyn Mellor, 13th, and Kenturah Hughes 17th, narrowly pipping rivals Vale of Aylesbury.
First Vet 35 was Joanna Conn of Serpentine RC in 42.53, first Vet 45 was Caroline Whittaker of Watford Joggers in 43.30 and first junior was Claire Wright of Thames Valley OC in 50.22.
Leading fun team were GE Health Care.
Earlier in the morning the 4K fun run was won by Sanjay Silvia of Wycombe Phoenix Harriers with Alex Watson and Dan Loach of Chiltern Harriers second and third respectively. First girl home was Chiltern's Connie Lewis followed by team-mate Emma Barraclough and Georgina Russell from Wycombe Phoenix in third.
The final race of the programme was the 1 mile family run, won by Chiltern's Will Perkin.
