Although mid-summer holidays, sixteen young Chiltern Harriers competed at Watford Harriers' final junior open meeting before refurbishment of the Woodside Stadium track over the autumn.
The club had members across all three age groups. In the Year 6/7 (Under 13) events, newcomer Alex Johnson had a great battle with Alex Russell in the 100m and long jump with performances of 14.4 to 14.5 and 4.06m to 4.03m respectively. Alex Johnson also ran a solid 800m in 2.37.6. Joe Aherne put in good efforts in 100m, 800m and long jump, winning the Year 6 jump with 3.52m.
Ellie Jones and Emma Barraclough also did well to post PBs for 800m at this time of the season with 2.38.9 and 2.53.6 respectively. Ellie also won the long jump with a PB. Club newcomers Sarah Cross and Alice Ford continued to gain valuable experience in 100m, 800m and long jump.
In the Year 4/5 (Under 11) events Will Perkin obtained PBs in all three events, including a 1.58.5 600m. Rebecca Yeabsley continued to show good form over the 80m sprint and 55m hurdles and Claudia Jones, Hannah Morton and Jessica Empson all achieved PBs in their 600m race.
Finally the Year 1/2/3 (Under 7/Under 9) children - Lizzie Barraclough, Sophie Morton, Rupert Empson and Ellie Perkin - all put in good efforts, Lizzie's 1.23.0 in the 400m particularly eye-catching.
The last two Watford Wednesday evening open meetings saw Chiltern Harriers athletes in action.
On 30th July Senior man Tom Beedell ran the 400m in 54.30 and Michael Goddard added to his impressive times for the season with 58.43 in his 400m race.
In the 800m, first year Under 15s Jack Dutton and George Gillingwater put in storming runs to achieve PBs - Jack with 2.16.8 and George in 2.19.88.

On a cool and rainy 13th August, Fabian again ran well to post a time of 4.01.5 in the 1500m. Also in the 1500m Under 13 Ellie Jones ran a measured race to finish in 5.25.05. Under 17 Alex ran a PB of 4.09.96 in the second fastest race of the evening. Michael, in his second year of Under 13 competition, posted another excellent time of 4.33.32, three seconds away from a PB, but ahead of any other 1500 times this season, and strong for this time of the season.
