The largest turnout of the season so far saw 32 of Chiltern Harriers young athletes make further progress in the latest round of the Young Athletes League.

A strong wind blowing across the Tilsley Park stadium in Abingdon made life difficult for the middle-distance runners fighting it up the back straight but aided the sprinters who had the wind at their backs all day - with some great times achieved.

Clarice Underwood in the Under 17 women's 100m stormed to a new PB of 11.9 seconds, a Grade 1 time and in the top handful of performances for the age group achieved this year. Jess White equalled her PB of 13.3 in the B string race and set a new best of 29.2 in the 200m.

Maria Nikodemova also continued her excellent season with a new PB of 12.9 in the Under 15 girls race and Sophie East won the Under 15 B string 100m in 13.0, just short of her PB. Both these are Grade 2 times.

In the Under 13 age group Nick Brabbs and Alex Russell both achieved season's bests of 13.6 in the 100m and Spencer Evans-Walker had a good 200m in 28.9. John Underwood and Robert Hughes both ran PBs in the 75m hurdles of 15.3. Sonny Harvey stormed to victory in the Under 15 400m in 64.3 and repeated the win in the 800m in 2.20.7. George Gillingwater was B string winner in 2.31.2.

Many of the middle distance runners found it hard to record improved times due to the strong wind, but PBs were achieved by Ellie Jones, 2.39.1 in winning the Under 13 A string 800m; Connie Lewis, 4.20.0 in winning the Under 13 A string1200m; Rosalind Firth, 4.27.8 in winning the Under 13 B string 1200m and Emma Barraclough, 2.57.6 in winning the Under 13 B string 800m.

Alan Stewart was A string winner of the Under 17 1500m in 4.45.9 and Rob Smith B string winner in 4.53.0. Jack Dutton was A string runner up in the Under 15 A string 1500m and Peter Illingworth B string winner. James McCarthy and Joe Cochrane were A and B string winners in the Under 13 1500m with Toby Jones gaining good experience as a guest. In the Under 13 boys 800m Andrew Stenning was second in the A string and Sam Butcher second in the B string.

Several athletes took on events other than their specialities and valuable points were gained by Barney Banks (Under 17 triple jump, 400m and 800m), Dan Loach (Under 17 400m and 800m), Joe Stevens (100m and 200m), Rob Smith (Under 17 long jump, 200m and 1500m), Dominic Jansen (Under 15 long jump,100m and 200m).

Also gaining valuable experience were Georgie Macdonald in the Under 15 200m, Sophie Hart in the Under 13 150m and shot, and Hannah Shepard and Rosie Mellor in the Under 13 sprints and long jump.

To round events off the Under 17 men's 4x400m team were the winners and the 4x400m Under 15 boys were second.
