Over thirty young local athletes, most of whom are members of Chiltern Harriers, competed at Woodside Stadium, Watford in the mid-season meeting for children in school years 1-7.
This was a great opportunity for the very youngest to gain experience of a track and field competition and for the older ones to try for PBs or attempt new events.
In the Year 6 and 7 events (under 13s) there was much success for the Chiltern contingent. In the 800m Joe Cochrane won the boys race in 2.36.9 with Joseph Aherne third in 2.49.9. The girls race was a one-two for Chiltern with Claudia McInerney in 2.43.7 and Connie Lewis in 2.47.8 both posting PBs.
Joseph Aherne was long jump winner with 3.40m and in the girls long jump Rosalind Firth and Harriet Ferguson were third and fourth with 3.41m and 3.29m respectively. Robert Hughes, Max Poplawski and Thomas Padwick were first, second and third in the shot with 7.40m, 7.22m, and 5.40m.
In the Year 4 and 5 events (under 11s) Chiltern athletes also did well in the middle-distance races - in the Year 5 boys 600m Bill Hughes was the winner in 1.57.1 despite a fall half way round, whilst Evie Gardner, Claudia Jones and Hannah Morton were a 1-2-3 for the girls with 2.07.2, 2.09.4 and 2.12.7.
The Year 4 600m race was won by Will Perkin in 1.58.7 with Ed Mundy second in 2.08.3 and Robert Hall third in 2.15.2. Claire Buttivant won the girls event in 2.04.4 with Rachel Padwick second in 2.12.9 and Jessica Empson third in 2.22.1.
Robyn Lisle was a convincing winner in the Year 4/5 gilrs long jump with a leap of 3.51m and Rebecca Yeabsley recorded the fastest girls 55m hurdles of the day in 12.8.
There were numerous good performances in the sprints with Peter Hughes in the Year 1/2/3 races (under 9) winning his 75m in 12.7 and achieving second in the 400m in 1.23.5. Sophie Morton was the Under 9 girls winner of the 400m in 1.38.7
In the Under 7s events a quartet from Chestnut Lane School all did well in their first taste of track and field, Tegan Ward sixth in the long jump, Stephen Hughes just holding off classmate Tom Hall in the 400m for first and Ellie Perkin winning the girls race in the same event.
