Buckinghamshire Schools Championships

Some of Chiltern Harriers more experienced young athletes competed for Chiltern region in the Bucks Schools championships at High Wycombe, in a meeting against teams from Milton Keynes, Buckingham, Aylesbury Vale and Wycombe districts.

For the Intermediate boys team, sprinters Joel Williams and Sam Rogers continued their excellent seasons. Joel was second in the 100m final in 11.6 and Sam was second in the 400m in 52.4 and winner of the 400m hurdles in 57.9, both times very close to PBs. Best middle-distance performance came from Alex Shelley with a very good second in the 1500m in 4.19.6.

Other good showings came from Joe Stevens, sixth in the 200m in 25.8 and Will Shepherd, fourth in the long jump with 5.59m. Dan Loach and Robert Smith were fourth and fifth in the 800m in PBs of 2.09.2 and 2.10.8 respectively.

In the Junior boys events Sonny Harvey was fourth in the 800m in 2.19.5 and Peter Illingworth was also fourth in the 1500m in 5.21.4.

On the girls side, Clarice Underwood continued her winning ways with victory in the Intermediate girls 100m in 12.4, with Jess White sixth in 14.1. In the Junior girls events Maria Nikodemova had an excellent day with a double victory in 100m and 200m, her 27.6 in the 200 being a PB. Sophie East also ran well to take third place in the 100m in 13.8.

Joel, Sam and Clarice will be competing in further representative competitions through the summer with times good enough to take part in the prestigious English Schools in July

In these championships athletes compete in the name of their Area. This year the Buckinghamshire Athletic Association had donated a trophy for each age group and those for Junior Girls and Intermediate Boys were both won by the Chiltern Area.
