A large Chiltern Harriers contingent made the trip to the stately setting of Cliveden House to compete in the annual festive Cliveden Cross Country race hosted by Burnham Joggers AC.
Conditions were near perfect with mild temperatures, little wind and relatively firm terrain. The race attracted its usual sell-out large field and 496 runners completed the 6 plus miles around the scenic countryside surrounding the house. The tough course comprises woodland paths, fields, river towpath and two climbs up the dreaded Yew Tree Hill steps from the Thames to the house.
Chiltern athletes showed they had not spent Christmas slumped in front of the telly eating mince pies, with many good performances. Leading the way was Eddie O'Gorman, second overall and second in the Senior Men's race in 39 minutes, 18 seconds. Also towards the top of the field were Kingsley Nanton (8th overall and 7th Senior Man in 41.35) and Fabian Downs (12th overall and 9th Senior Man in 42.31). Cameron Jack was 77th overall and 32nd Senior Man in 49.28.
In the Vet 40 category Adrian Dale finished 14th (54th overall) in 47.43, Michael Turney was 15th (56th overall) in 47.51, Steve Perkin 17th (62nd overall) in 48.08, and Rob Engers 44th (127th overall) in 51.58.
Chiltern ladies also continued to display strong winter form with Sandra Reynolds second Senior Lady (48th overall) in 47.21 and Laura Butt third Senior Lady (55th overall) in 47.50.
Amongst the ladies Vet 40 category Kate Loach was 10th (142nd overall) in 52.44, Isabelle Winter was 11th (165th overall) in 53.39, and Claire Stubbings was 12th (170th overall) in 54.15. Jane Peel also ran well to finish in 25th place in 61.46.
Many runners used the race as a sharpener for next Saturday's Bucks Cross Country Championships at RAF Halton, where another strong Chiltern presence is expected.
